On
many of the events listed below you can view (and print) the original flyer that
was distributed at the Monthly Social Meeting. Just look for the "print the
flyer" icon next to the event.
You will need the free
Adobe PDF Reader installed on your PC. If you don't already have it installed
you can download it from Adobe.
Google maps tip: Google
maps provide you with the ability to get driving directions from your door to our
event; all you have to do is select "Get Directions To Here" (you may need to click
the blue marker on campground maps).

Weather tip:
In general the temperature drops 5 degrees for every 1,000 feet of elevation
change. Phoenix is 1,117 feet above sea level so a campground that is located
at 5,000 feet should be about 20 degrees cooler than Phoenix.

Sunday Morning Hike
Every Sunday
9:00 am
Looking for something to do on a Sunday morning?
How about a hike? Meet your hike leader Jon Quinn at the trailhead at the Dreamy Draw Recreation Area (map).
This is the
exit off of Northern and SR-51 (head east on Northern). Jon will be at the pavilion at the end of the drive.
This morning hike was a favorite for years,
it's loosely organized and very relaxed. So get up and hike for a few hours--it
won't be strenuous, and it'll be a great opportunity to meet and make new friends.
If you have any questions, contact Jon at 602-234-2425.
There is no charge for this event!

Sunset Trail
Hike
Saturday, May 10 7:30 am
A Day-Hike on the North–Face
of Mount Elden Flagstaff, Arizona
The Sunset Trail begins at about 7,200 feet on the north side of Mount Elden. The
trail will provide some opportunities for good views of the San Francisco Peaks.
Portions of the trail climb steeply up to the ridge to the top of Mount Elden. The
ridge is at approximately 9,000 feet. It is approximately 3.5 miles to get to the
ridge. The trail along the top of the ridge goes another mile and leads to a lookout
tower. At that location, you can see portions of Flagstaff below.
We break for lunch on the top of the mountain. Bring your lunch, plenty of water,
and good hiking shoes to navigate the trail. Don’t forget your sunscreen. The scenery
is good along the hike, so bring your camera.
Mount Elden is about 120 miles north of Phoenix Elevation change on the hike is
about 1,800 feet. The hike is about 9 +/- miles round trip. Those who want a shorter
hike can stop once we are at the top of the ridge and not go on to the lookout tower.
Then, the hike is only about 7 miles.
Access to the trail is from a forest service road. High clearance vehicles are recommended
to get to the trail head as about 4.5 miles of the road are gravel/rock. So we will
car pool from metro Phoenix to the trail head. Meet at the Home Depot store on the
northeast corner of Carefree Highway and I-17 (map).
It is just off the freeway exit on the north side of Carefree Highway in the shopping
center.
For more information contact Jim at 602-954-9139.

Gross Indecency
Saturday, May 10
7:30 pm
Out Reach Theater (located on the north side of the Herberger)
222 East Monrow Street (3rd Street and Van Buren)
Phoenix, AZ (map)
“Gross Indecency: Three Trials of Oscar Wilde” is an intimate look at the trial
of the century that destroyed the most celebrated playwright of his time, Oscar
Wilde. Within three short months, Wilde went from the toast of the town, with two
smash hits (“The Importance of Being Earnest” and “An Ideal Husband”) playing to
packed houses, to complete humiliation and utter scorn. Using various texts, including
transcripts from the trial, newspaper accounts, personal letters, and biographies,
we see a provocative exploration of the issues of censorship, sexuality, and the
role of the artist in society: An absolutely gripping courtroom drama full of Wilde's
trademark wordplay and witticism.
Hans & I park in the Arizona Center parking garage located just N/E of the Theatre
& walk south through the Arizona Center to the theatre. If you would like to
join us before the play for dinner at My Big Fat Greek Restaurant in the Arizona
Center please let us know by May 6th.

This May join Gilligan and
Skipper for a three-hour tour (last year’s was 120 hours) and some boat access camping
at Lake Havasu and shopping under the London Bridge (map). Gilligan will provide
transportation to Gilligan’s Island located right on cool, clear, refreshing Lake
Havasu. You should expect to be in a swimsuit and in the water all day. Gilligan
suggests a small tent or just sleep under the stars; the weather will be perfect
for sleeping outside. There are ramadas and vault toilets at the sites where we
will camp.
For details on all the activities see the flyer!
Pickup and drop off point is Site Six, 591 Beachcomber Blvd (see map).
Sign up, and you will be contacted by phone in early
May to finalize details. Be sure to leave your phone number because Cooper doesn’t
know how to work a computer. Call Cooper at 602-694-4797. He will answer “On-Site
Auto Alarms” or leave a message, and he will return your call.

Mount Lemon
Campout
Friday, May 23 - Monday, May 26
This is the one you’ve been
waiting for. Three beautiful days camping on Mt. Lemmon near 8000 ft. surrounded
by the cool pines above Tucson. A great way to beat the heat on Memorial Day weekend.
We’ve got the Whitetail Group Campsite No. 5 reserved
(map). The campsite is only a year
old and has a large ramada, electricity, water, grills and terraced tent sites along
the hill.
Getting to the campsite is a memorable trip up the Sky Island Scenic Byway,
a recently improved road, sometimes compared to a trip from Mexico to Canada because
of the changing vegetation from the desert floor to the fir tree forest above.
Great
hiking trails are nearby. An organized hike is planned for both Saturday and Sunday.
In addition there are many things to explore up on the mountain. The Mt. Lemmon
ski area operates its lift year-round. The Iron Door restaurant is open for lunch.
There’s the famous pie shop at Summerhaven only four miles up the road. Additionally
you will want to explore the Marshall Gulch Picnic Area and the Lemmon Summit Trailheads.
The campsite is quite spacious and optimized for tent camping which is strongly
recommended. Parking space is limited. The improved terraced sites are perfect for
tenting. This is the time to try that old tent again. We’ve been told that there
is room for four small campers. If you must use a camper, the spots will be reserved
on a first-come-first-paid basis. Do not bring a camper unless you have talked to
Doug.
A Saturday meal is planned for 5:00 PM and those wishing to come for the meal
only are welcome. We hope that people from Phoenix and Tucson will join us for the
hikes and meal.
Your hosts are Doug in
Phoenix and Peter in Tucson. For more information contact Doug in the Phoenix area
at 480.991.6513.
You can choose to stay 2 or 3 nights. 3 nights is $25 for members/$30 for guests
(non-members). 2 nights is $20 for members/$25 for guests (non-members). If you're
only joining us for the Saturday meal that's $8 for members/$10 for guests (non-members). |

Algodones Adventure
Saturday May 31
7:30 am ~ 9:00 pm
Join your Desert Adventures amigos for a day (barely) south of the border in Algodones,
Baja California, Mexico!
Here’s the scoop: we’ll meet
in the parking lot at 7:30 am for a light breakfast. We all get in a nice bus and
ride for three hours (one break included) until we get to Algodones, which is a
border town just west of Yuma, AZ. We walk across the border and are magically transformed
to a land where margaritas and “tchatchkies” (look it up) abound. You’re on your own to explore until
the bus leaves: promptly at 5:30 pm. We should be back in Phoenix by 9 pm.
This will be a very popular event, so send in your check early. As we have to pay
a lot of money for the bus, we cannot offer refunds. If you need to cancel after
paying we'll help you find someone to sell your ticket to.
ID requirements: The government
has pushed back the date that we switch to the "passports only" rule to June of
next year so you procrastinators have a reprive. In order to get back across the
border into the USA you will need either your passport or both your driver’s license
and your birth certificate. You really should go ahead and get a passport. They
are good for 15 years and they make domestic airline travel easier (you can scan
a passport at the self service terminals at the airport).
We'll meet the bus at the AZ Democratic Party Parking Lot
2910 North Central Ave in central Phoenix (map).
Of course you don't have to worry about the drive but here's a map of Algodones if you would like to check it out.
Any questions? Call Jeff at 623-780-1717 or 623-670-8909
This cost for this adventure is $35 for members, $40
for guests (non-members). This is a bargain! At today's gas prices most of you would
spend over $50 to drive this yourself! There are a limited number of tickets so send your check
in early!

Feathered Dinosaurs

Arizona Museum of Natural History
53 North MacDonald
Mesa, AZ (map)
“Feathered Dinosaurs and the Origin of Flight” presents exciting evidence from remarkable
fossils discovered in China that are bringing new answers to the on-going debate
about the relationship between dinosaurs and birds, as well as how they evolved
the ability to fly. The exhibit is a rare opportunity to see firsthand a collection
of 35 fossils that are national treasures on loan from the People’s Republic of
China. These fossils reveal a new understanding of how birds are related to dinosaurs.
Also
on display are many life-size recreations that demonstrate startling changes
in how dinosaurs have been portrayed over the years.
At 80,000-square-feet, the Mesa Southwest Museum is recognized as one of the largest
“dinosaur” museums in the Southwest. Visitors to the Mesa Southwest Museum experience
an incredible journey through Prehistoric Arizona that begins with the formation
of the solar system itself. Other attractions include the awe-inspiring three-story
Dinosaur Mountain, Dinosaur Hall, Walk through Time, Native Peoples gallery, Hall
of Mesoamerican cultures, a Spanish mission replica, Territorial Jail Cells, Arizona
and the Movies, and turn-of-the-century Mesa.
After the museum we are
meeting for lunch at The Landmark Restaurant so why not join us for both events!

History comes alive from this vintage location. The distinctive gable roofed building

Large cottonwood trees grew on each side of the canal with branches touching in
the middle. It was a favorite swimming spot for children in the summer. Your trip
fee entitles you to infinite visits to The Landmark’s famous Salad Room, where you
will be awestruck at the selection. There are over 80 items to choose from including
quail eggs, hearts of palm, & pickled watermelon. Click

The Little Sisters of Hoboken operate Mount St. Helen's School in Hoboken, New Jersey.
Originally founded as a missionary order, they started out running a leper colony
on an island south of France. Forced to leave the island when they lost control
to a group of Protestant competitors, they returned to Hoboken. They went unnoticed
until one day their cook, Sister Julia -- Child of God, unwittingly served some
tainted vichyssoise soup, and 52 sisters died of botulism. Fortunately, a few of
the sisters were off playing bingo with some Maryknolls and were spared. Upon discovering
the disaster, Mother Superior had a vision -- it was either Saint Catherine of Siena
or Saint Thomas Aquinas in drag (she's not sure) -- in which she was told to start
a greeting card company to raise funds for the burials of the 52. The greeting cards
were an enormous success, and thinking there was plenty of money, Reverend Mother
bought a VCR for the convent. When she realized there was only enough money left
to bury 48, she decided to stage a talent show to raise the money to bury the last
four sisters, who were put on ice in the convent deep freeze.
Price includes dinner, tea or coffee, show, and tax. Other drinks, dessert,
and gratuity are extra. The menu changes for each show and will be available for
viewing closer to show date at

Grand Canyon Campout
Thursday, Sept 4 - Sunday, Sept 7
Mather Group Campground (map)
Join Desert Adventures, and your host Papa Joe, as we make our annual car camping
trek to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon ! This is the perfect weekend to see the
canyon! It's AFTER the summer vacation season so we avoid the crowds yet the weather
is still great! We will be staying in the Mather Group Campground which has all
the expected comforts of a typically well maintained National Park Campground (and
is just a short walk away from the canyon rim).
Car Camping - What to bring:
You will need a tent, ground cloth, sleeping bag, and an air mattress/foam pad.
Should you plan on preparing most of your own meals, you will need a gas stove,
cooking pans and utensils. There are charcoal grills at the campsite, and you may
bring your own charcoal to grill your favorite culinary masterpiece. Safe drinking
water is approximately 100 feet from the campsite, so be sure to bring a water container.
Babbitt's, a large grocery and department store, is located nearby for all those
forgotten items. If all else fails, there are many restaurants on the South Rim
to match all budgets and tastes. Since we will be car camping, it is OK to take
all the comforts of home with you, but keep in mind there are no electrical hookups
in the Mather camping area so do not bother to bring every electrical gadget you
own. There is, however, electricity in the restrooms and shower areas. And please...LEAVE
YOUR PETS AT HOME.
Final RSVP, payment (or refund) will be Tuesday, September 2nd, at the DA Monthly
Social Meeting. Please remit all mail reservations and payments to our Post Office
box (checks should be made payable to Desert Adventures).
Cost for members: 3 nights is $35 or 2 nights is $30

Reynold's Creek
Campout
Thursday, Sept 25 - Monday, Sept 29
Join us for the annual Joe & Hans’ Relaxing Reynolds Creek Campout. Things are
pretty hot in the Valley so head up to the Salome and Sierra Ancha Wilderness located
in the Tonto National Forest. We will be at 5200 feet amidst the lovely Sycamore
and Ponderosa pines.
You can arrive anytime after 1pm on Thursday, September 25th. The gate will be locked
before that time. Drive in, and pick a site. There are several trails in the area
including one along Workman's Creek to view the 250-foot waterfall; access to the
bottom of the falls is possible.
On Saturday, dinner will be served at 5 pm and will feature extra-lean burgers and
grilled chicken. We gather around the eating area at 4 pm for appetizers. Please
bring an appetizer to share.
After 1pm on Thursday, the gate will be closed and appear locked, but it is
not locked. Please close the gate once you drive through. There are
vault toilets and large picnic tables at the main area. There is no water so plan
accordingly. Remember to bring food, drinking water, hiking gear, and firewood.

Olive Mill Tour
Saturday, Dec 13
Sign in starting at 10 am
Tour Arizona's only working olive farm & mill. On the tour, you will learn about
their products & farm, their unique olive tree varieties, see how Extra Virgin
Olive Oil is made, the different classes of Olive Oil, the health benefits of Extra
Virgin Olive Oil, and taste flavored olive oils, stuffed olives, & tapenades,
(a Provençal dish consisting of finely chopped olives, capers, & olive oil).
Christmas is just 12 days later, so shop for unique gifts & local foods. The
Olive Mill’s unique gift boxes are perfect for those hard to shop for. The Queen
Creek Olive Mill is the only producer of Arizona Extra Virgin Olive Oil & is
used by top chefs in Arizona, so your gift will be uniquely Arizonan.
When you purchase a bottle of Queen Creek Olive Mill olive oil, you are literally
buying one of the best olive oils in the world. Their olive grove in Queen Creek
is at the base of the San Tan Mountains in an area known for its fertile soil. In
the Gila River flood plains, this region is famous for its high quality fruits and
vegetables. The combination of long sunny days and cool desert nights provide the
ideal growing conditions for their trees.
After the tour, join us for al fresco dining in the grove. We will have lunch at
The Olive Mill’s del Piero Mediterranean cafe & dine in their new olive grove.
Shaded patio seating is also available. This is a no-host lunch.
The Queen Creek Olive Mill is located at 25062 S. Meridian Road in Queen Creek (map).
If you get lost, call 480-888-9290. Allow 1-hour travel time from central Phoenix.
