CALENDAR OF EVENTS |
|

print the calendar |
On many of the events listed below you can view (and print) the original flyer that
was distributed at the Monthly Social Meeting. Just look for the "print the
flyer" icon next to the event.
You will need the free
Adobe PDF Reader installed on your PC. If you don't already have it installed
you can download it from Adobe.
Weather tip:
In general the temperature drops 5 degrees for every 1,000 feet of elevation
change. Phoenix is 1,117 feet above sea level so a campground that is located
at 5,000 feet should be about 20 degrees cooler than Phoenix.

Mt Lemmon Campout
Friday, June 4th - Sunday, June 6th
A beautiful weekend camping on Mt. Lemmon near 8000 ft. surrounded by the cool
pines above Tucson is a great way to beat the heat this summer. We’ve got the
Whitetail Group Campsite No. 5 reserved. It has a large Ramada, electricity,
water, grills, and terraced tent sites along the hill.
Getting to the campsite is a memorable trip up the Sky Island Scenic Byway (see
reverse), a recently improved road that has changing vegetation from the desert
floor to the fir tree forest above. Figure about two hours from Phoenix to
Tucson and another hour up the hill.
Great hiking trails are nearby. An organized hike is planned for Saturday. In
addition there are many things to explore up on the mountain. The Mt. Lemmon ski
area operates its lift year-round. The Iron Door restaurant is open for lunch.
The little vacation village of Summerhaven is only four miles up the road.
The campsite is quite spacious and optimized for tent camping, which is strongly
recommended. The improved terraced sites are perfect for tenting. This is the
time to try that old tent again. Parking space is limited to about 15 vehicles.
Pickup bed campers are OK. Please do not bring any other type of camper without
talking with Doug first.
A Saturday meal is planned for 5:00 PM, and those wishing to come for the meal
only are welcome. We hope that people from Phoenix and Tucson will join us for
the hikes and meal.
Directions from Phoenix: take I-10 east to Ina Rd
Exit 248. Turn left under the highway and go approx. 13 miles to Kolb Rd. (Ina
changes to Skyline then Sunrise on the way.) Turn right, and go approx. 4 miles
to Tanque Verde Rd. Turn left, and follow Tanque Verde 3 miles to Catalina
Highway. Turn left on to Catalina. There is a “last chance” shopping mall on
your immediate right. Go approx. 20 miles up the Catalina to Whitetail
Campground. If you are camping, you do not have to pay at the fee station on the
way up. Do not attempt to use the control road on the north side of Mt. Lemmon
through San Manuel unless you are driving a tank.
Hosts are Doug in Phoenix and Peter in Tucson. For more information contact Doug in the Phoenix area
at 480.991.6513 - Peter in Tucson at 520.881.8276.
Price for the campout and meal is $25 per member/$30 per non-member. Price for
only the Saturday meal only is $10 per member/$12 per non-member.

Mormon Lake Campout and Mt Humphreys Hike
Friday, June 25 - Sunday, June 27
Join your hosts, David and Eric, for a summer escape with Desert Adventures!
Dairy Springs Campground is in a cool grove of ponderosa pines and white firs 24
miles south east of Flagstaff. Three hiking trails originate at Dairy Springs.
These trails lead to scenic overlooks of nearby Mormon Lake. Wildlife watching
is also a popular activity in this area. The scenic little mountain resort
village of Mormon Lake is conveniently close to the camp, offering horseback
rides, mountain bike rentals. You'll also find a country store, service station,
and a picturesque cowboy steak house there (and maybe a cowboy or two).
Elevation at Dairy Springs is 7,000 feet. On Saturday, those who are interested
are invited to travel to Mount Humphreys for a hike to the highest peak in
Arizona (elevation 12,633’). The hike is rated STRENOUS. The hiking trip is 8
miles round trip and includes an elevation gain of 3272’. The entire round trip
hike takes about 5 hours. We will leave at 7:30 AM to get to Mt. Humphreys,
about an hour away. The trail starts out in a nice flat meadow but quickly gains
elevation as it ascends in a series of long switchbacks. After about 3 miles,
the trail reaches a saddle at 11,800 feet. This saddle connects Humphreys Peak
with Agassiz Peak to the south. From the saddle, the Humphreys Trail continues
north for another mile as it passes several false summits. The trail follows the
rocky treeless ridge to the main summit. Mount Humphreys is the highest point
for hundreds of miles around, and a large portion of Arizona is visible from the
summit. As you stand on the summit, you will gain a real sense of standing on
top of the world.
